This office came into existence on September 1, 1971 after bifurcation of the O/o the Accountant General, Maharashtra, Mumbai and was known as O/o The Accountant General (Central) Mumbai and then as O/o The Director of Audit (Central), Mumbai from April 1, 1979. It was renamed as O/o The Principal Director of Audit (Central) from September 6, 1989. The office is now located in the new business district of Mumbai, the Bandra-Kurla Complex and is housed in an independent building “Audit Bhavan”.
